I am not sure if this is best way, but, an experience:
Dear EHCP DEVEL,
first of all congratulations for your fantastic work...
im having some problem with the folder permissions....
i have installed joomla 1.7 via the script installer...all work fine but i cant install any template or module....
i have googled around but didnt find any good solution....everyone say to set 777 how permission but we know that is a bad idea....how can i solve this ? Thanks. Antonio
Tue, Nov 1 2011 1:55am - Ehcp developer
if you are installing template/module through joomla web interface, then, you have to give 777 permission to "some" joomla folders. I dont know which folder, but you need to give that to folders required by joomla. Of course, it is a bad idea to give 777 to ALL folders.
Tue, Nov 1 2011 1:56am - Ehcp developer
please also post "which folders required to give perm" so that we can include them in ehcp installer.

wordpress and nginx, permalinks |

thanks to: Brian Chabot:
I wasn't sure where this should go... Feel free to add it to the
documentation.
You can see it at work (for about the next day or so...) at
http://bctest.c4i.me/ (or till I break it...)
The test site is identical in most ways to http://indiebandwebsites.com/
but runs nginx.
----- Feel free to share the below parts - no attribution necessary
-----
Here's my work-around for getting permalinks to work right in nginx and
WordPress using EHCP:
1. Change apachetemplate.nginx to read:
-------------cut-----------
# this file used in Easy Hosting Control Panel (ehcp), www.ehcp.net
# webserver config file for nginx webserver
# This version is meant to work right with WordPress and the
# nginx compatibility plugin.
server {
listen 80;
server_name {domainname} www.{domainname};
access_log {homedir}/logs/access_log;
error_log {homedir}/logs/error_log;
access_log /var/log/apache_common_access_log;
error_page 404 = @wordpress;
log_not_found off;
root {homedir}/httpdocs;
index index.php index.html index.htm;
location ^~ /files/ {
rewrite /files/(.+) /wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$1
last;
}
location @wordpress {
fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root/index.php;
include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME /index.php;
}
location ^~ /blogs.dir/ {
internal;
root /path/to/blog/wp-content;
}
location ~ \.php$ {
try_files $uri @wordpress;
fastcgi_index index.php;
fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME
$document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
include fastcgi_params;
}
location ~ /\.ht {
deny all;
}
}
-------------cut-----------
2. Use the "nginx Compatibility" plugin for PHP5:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nginx-compatibility/
- Install plugin but DO NOT activate it on install (that would activate
the PHP4 version.)
- Go into the plugins directory and activate the php5 version manually.
Done. You can now use permalinks other than the default.

dynamic ip, dyndns |

just make sure ehcp->options->edit->dynamic ip is checked.
the reason for such service (dyndns):
there should be a static entry point in dns resolution chain. for ex:
stage 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5
root dns servers->.com registrar->your registrar->a dns of your choise (with static ip)-> maybe another dns
normally, stage 4 is your server. however, if your server has no static ip, you have two choice:
a)update your registrar database each time your ip changed; which is very non-practical; and mostly cannot be automated.
b) redirect your domain in stage 4 to dyndns-like service (which has static ip), and put dyndns client on your server, this way, dyndns will accept dns requests, will update ip when necessary (the thing that cannot be automated in case a), then redirect all dns requests to your server to stage 5. In this case, dyndns acts as a dns proxy, or dns gateway, or registrar, which CAN update IP of your server.
If you had a static ip in your server, stage 5 is not needed, and your server would be at stage 4.
I hope these are explanatory.
this is really a hard-to-understand topic, for many people.
(I will post this explanation to ehcp.net too)

If bind is updated and I set my DNS template time lower, it could cause less than one minute of downtime as the IP is updated?

Thanks for the info!
I'm not sure I understand completely why I'd have to route through DynDNS.Won't my domains be redirected to my new IP anyways since my name servers are ns3.mydomain.com and ns4.mydomain.com, and the associated hosts are defined in DNS on my server?If Bind is updated properly, they'd reach my server even if my IP changes, correct?If not, could you please explain it further for me, as I'm confused about how dynamic DNS works.It seems to me that Dynamic DNS creates name servers for you which link to your server's current IP address.If the IP address changes, so are the name servers.But would my Dyn DNS url of test.dyndns.org respond to ns1 - ns4.test.dyndns.org since I have the host entries created in Bind?
Not sure how this works.Very confused

yes, ehcp can monitor IP change, and update bind config accordingly,
however, you still need dyndns, because you need to redirect your
domains to somewhere (this case, dyndns servers, or similar)
install dyndns client also on your server.
In future, we have plans to to offer dyndns directly in ehcp fully,
without need to an external dyndns service.

mysql remote connection |

to connect to a local db, just use "localhost" as mysql host
to connect to a remote db, use remote ip (real external ip of server)
however, to connect to a mysql from remote, you need to do some settings in mysql.
open my.cnf,
bind-address = 127.0.0.1, 88.33.44.55 (your external real ip)
after that, you need to give your user to connect from outside mysql server.
open mysql console (or do in phpmyadmin, privileges)
grant all privileges on db.* to user@'yourip' identified by 'pass';
flush privileges;
(if you have firewall, you need to open port 3306)

I added only one domain name to ehcp on a virtual private server and it works fine, but I recently added another one, and I used the same exact settings as the previous one, and it will only go to the ehcp control panel. Is there a setting for the newly added domain soit will go to the index.html file inside its folder? Thanks!
