editting Domain Aliases

I am currently trying to implement short URLs for a media wiki installation. I cant seem to get the alias correct. I made the edit to the alias template for the specific domain.

/wiki /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/index.php

however when I restart apache it does not seem to take. My ultimate objective is to shorten the existing url "http://domain.com/index.php/Main_Page" to just "domain.com" but I cannot even seem to get a simple alias directive to work. =(
I have read the short url pages @ mediawiki.org but cannot seem to figure this out.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think you should use url rewriting using .htaccess or similar.
look at documentations dealing about url rewrite, apache mod rewrite
